Lines & Veils
These are themes, ideas, incidences, or types of violence players may not want included in their game.
– Lines are hard lines in the game we do not cross. These are things that are not in the game at all. They are not alluded to or done off screen. They simply do not happen.
– Veils are things that happen off screen in a game. They are things that are allowed to happen, but do not occupy “camera” time, as it were. The easiest way to deal with veils is to let the scene fade to black. You can describe the door closing on the room where an NPC is about to be tortured, but that’s it. You can say the two characters tumble into bed together and then that’s it.
Lines
- Children or Adolescents being abused or being subject to Cruelty or Torture
- Graphic Process of Non-Human Animal (Natural) Torture and/or Cruelty
- Racist or Ableist Slurs: Even in relation to the Racism related Veil you need to avoid using any actual slurs.
- Sexual Violence
- Domestic Violence
- Suicide and Suicidal Ideation on Screen: This does not prevent your character from struggling with these kinds of thoughts or impulses it should simply not come up directly at game.
- Real World National and Global Politics: Our game is focused on local experience, and the timeline of this game is not our real world timeline. These discussions should never come up as part of the game.
Veils
- Racism extending across multiple scenes.
- Animal Violence
- Prolonged Torture
- Hopelessness / Depression: Like the Line regarding suicide, your character can struggle with these things, but you should not make it focus of scenes, and the storytellers will make an effort to keep situations from feeling hopeless.
